## What is the Half Guard Fundamentals?

The Half Guard Fundamentals is a fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique that every practitioner should master. Whether you're a white belt just starting out or an experienced grappler refining your game, understanding the mechanics and timing of this technique will elevate your BJJ.

## How to Perform the Half Guard Fundamentals

Here's a detailed breakdown based on expert instruction:

# Half Guard Fundamentals

All right, guys, now let's learn a little bit about the half guard, okay? How half

guard was born and what is used for. So basically, we already understood that this

is the close guard. And this is probably one of the most safest guard that we can

play. But sometimes I'm fighting with someone here that actually knows how to pass

the guard. And the guy starts standing and he broke my guard. and he's going to my

side trying to pass. And I'm unable to close guard again. So to prevent him from

going to my side control, I end up catching his leg. Okay? Let's turn this way.

Completed this way. So this is called the half guard.

How should I lock my foot? So I have my left leg around his leg I should always

lock the figure for this way okay so the figure four should be always outside very

important I should always face I should always face my opponent I should never face

the other way okay let's change sidesab let's do on the other side so basically

we're here right so my leg is trapping his leg. What is the most basic and the

fundamental thing from half guard? Since I could stuck one of his legs,

now my next goal is to actually bring my shin in front of his hip and then be

able to replace the full guard. So that's how the half guard was born. So in order

just to keep him stuck in front of my legs. Of course,

once you start learning more about this game and you start creating, developing more

skills, you can actually use the half guard to start several attacks,

okay? Fundamental things from, let's turn this way a little bit, fundamental things

from half guard, you should always lock the figure four like so, Always face your

opponent, never stay flat on your back. This is actually very bad because it becomes

very easy for him to hug my head and have a underhook. So I should always face my

opponent, okay, creating frames with my arm, stay lower a little bit,

so open more, yeah. So I'm like that.

So one, I'm not giving the underhook too easy. Two, I'm not letting him hug my

head, so I'm always blocking, and my back is out of the floor. That's how you

start developing your halfguard. Another two that we can always use here is the

shield, which is my top leg. I can use my knee in front of his chest.

This will create distance. And then, very easy, I can just move back and replace

the full guard again. Okay?

So basically, the half guard is a way to keep your opponent in front of your legs,

and you're able to use the leverage of your legs in order to replace the full

guard. All right?
