# Osoto Gari: Complete BJJ Technique Guide

## What is the Osoto Gari?

The Osoto Gari is a fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique that every practitioner should master. Whether you're a white belt just starting out or an experienced grappler refining your game, understanding the mechanics and timing of this technique will elevate your BJJ.

## How to Perform the Osoto Gari

Here's a detailed breakdown based on expert instruction:

# Osoto Gari

All right, guys, let's work the Osotogari. Okay, Osotogari is a very important throw. However, it's very basic. Okay, it's a very basic throw. So basically, we have grips, right? I will grab my right hand a little bit higher here. Okay? What I need to do here, I need to step my leg. So it's my left leg. I have to step very very deep inside. Let's move a little bit more here. So basically I step my leg very deep inside. Important, I have to keep my chest on his chest. Okay? So this is step one. Step two, I break his balance. I have to make sure I'm going to pull him down this way. Okay? So notice how he's very out of balance. And then I'm gonna sweep my leg behind his leg, which is my right leg, I will sweep behind his leg. Common mistake, people put the foot on the floor. It's not foot on the floor. I have to actually sweep the leg, okay? So I have to keep my leg extended and sweep the leg. Don't post the foot on the floor and try to bend your opponent.

Okay, so basically, we're here, so I step one, two, and then sweep the leg, okay? When you're doing this with a training partner that has no much experience, make sure you hold his arm to don't let him throw too hard on the floor on the back of his head, okay?

Of course, because it's a very basic throw, you have to have some setups. So a particular way that I like to use to do the Osotogari because in tournaments a lot of people, they have their hips back. And then become quite far for me to reach, right? So what I'm going to do here? I step my right foot. I turn my hips and I use my leg just to push his leg. Now the Osotogari is really close to me so I can get close, can make him out of balance, and then sweep the leg and hold his arm.

Okay, so one more time. So I'm here, his hip is back, so I fake a hip throw. I step one, I turn my hip two. Notice how my right leg just pushes his leg. Now left foot, break his balance, and then I have a nice Osotogari, okay? So that's a good way to set up the Osotogari. Okay, let's give it a try.

## Key Points to Remember

When drilling the Osoto Gari, focus on these essential details:

1. **Positioning** — Your body position determines your success rate

2. **Timing** — Wait for the right moment, don't force it

3. **Grip** — Secure proper grips before committing to the technique

4. **Finish** — Follow through completely once you initiate

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many practitioners struggle with the Osoto Gari because they:
