# X Guard: Complete BJJ Technique Guide

## What is the X Guard?

The X Guard is a fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique that every practitioner should master. Whether you're a white belt just starting out or an experienced grappler refining your game, understanding the mechanics and timing of this technique will elevate your BJJ.

## How to Perform the X Guard

Here's a detailed breakdown based on expert instruction:

# X-Guard

All right, next introduction is about the X -Guard. What means X -Guard?

So basically, the name says everything. I'm using my legs as an axe in order to

make my opponent stuck with my legs. And then I use my legs to make him out of

balance and end up sweeping him. How the X -Guard was born. So basically, we,

on your knees, we started on a butterfly guard and then I have a good under hook

and I'm going to potentially sweep him but what happened he's going to he's going

to post his leg defending the butterfly guard and then okay so his leg is wide

open I'm going to grab under his leg and I have this what happened if he pushed

this knee he ele pode ir para frente.

E depois from here

I can do several sweeps. Don't fall. So basically I can push and stand up and

sweep. Maybe he's stand up with me. Notice how my legs is exactly as the name.

So it's called the X guard. I can use this to also sweep him backwards.

Go back again.

And do several techniques from here, all right? So the whole idea is that how can

I use my legs underneath him creating an X, okay? So that's why it's called the X

-Guard.

This would be the full X -Guard. Also, that is a very important technique that's

called it the one -leg X -Guard. What means one leg x -garde? Here, as you guys can

see, I have both of his legs. How would be one leg ex -gird? So basically,

I have only one leg, and I have one knee inside, and the other leg outside.

This is called it one -leg -exguard. Can you do a transition between from one leg x

-gird to x -gird. Yes, you can. So maybe sometimes he remove my foot. So I lost the

hip connection. I can immediately change to to x -gird. And then maybe he messed

with my feet there again. I can also go back to one -leg x -gird. And you can use

these techniques to actually sweep him, or eventually end up submitting him with

several techniques, which is footlocks and triangles and so. That is a lot of things

to do. Alright? So that's the introduction about X -Guard and one -leg X -Guard.

See you next lesson.

## Key Points to Remember

When drilling the X Guard, focus on these essential details:

1. **Positioning** — Your body position determines your success rate

2. **Timing** — Wait for the right moment, don't force it

3. **Grip** — Secure proper grips before committing to the technique

4. **Finish** — Follow through completely once you initiate

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many practitioners struggle with the X Guard because they:

- Rush the technique without proper setup

- Neglect the importance of base and balance

- Forget to control their opponent's reactions

- Don't drill both sides equally

## When to Use the X Guard

The X Guard works best when:

- Your opponent's weight distribution creates an opening
