Why are gi and no-gi weight limits different?

Because you weigh in wearing what you compete in. The IBJJF’s gi chart is for an athlete “with gi on”, and its no-gi chart for an athlete in no-gi kit. That is why each gi limit sits 2 to 3 kg (4 to 7 lb) above the matching no-gi limit.

At IBJJF events you step on the official scale once, just before your first match, after the uniform check. If you are over the limit for the division you registered in, you are disqualified, so weigh yourself in your competition gi, not in shorts.

What is the open class in BJJ?

The open class, or absolute, is a division with no weight limit. Who can enter depends on the event. At the Pan Pacific IBJJF Championship 2026, for example, the top three in each division could register for the open class, every adult black belt was eligible, and there was no open class for white belts in the gi. Always check the event’s own page.

How do ADCC weight classes differ?

ADCC runs no-gi grappling with its own rules and weight classes. At ADCC Open events, men compete in nine classes (-55, -60, -65, -70, -76, -83, -91, -100, +100 kg) and women in eight (-50, -55, -60, -65, -70, -75, -80, +80 kg), with an absolute division for adults 18 and over. ADCC scoring also differs: the first half of most matches has no points. These are ADCC’s Open-event classes; the ADCC World Championship sets its own divisions. What weight classes do UK competitions use?

UK events publish their own weight tables, so check each event’s page before you register rather than assuming IBJJF limits. The UK governing body, UKBJJA, ranks athletes on results at affiliated events: a weight-division gold is worth 9 points, silver 3 and bronze 1, multiplied by the event’s ranking status. Which BJJ weight class should I enter?

Plenty of grapplers compete. In our member data, 63% to 76% of blue to black belts said they compete often or sometimes. The BJJ belts guide has the full split by belt.

How do you know your game is ready for competition?

Before a tournament, test your best positions on heavier and more experienced partners, not just the ones they already work on. JitsAI’s ladder splits every technique by partner size and experience.

  • One Focus a week, with pinned lessons from Henrique Rezende’s 74-lesson fundamentals course.
  • A nine-level ladder for every technique, from partners less experienced than you to more experienced ones, each split lighter, same weight and heavier.
  • Land it once and it’s a hit; 3 wins across 2 sessions and it’s proven.

What else do people ask about BJJ weight classes?

How many weight classes are there in IBJJF jiu-jitsu?

Adult men have nine: rooster, light-feather, feather, light, middle, medium-heavy, heavy, super-heavy and ultra-heavy. Adult women have eight, from rooster to super-heavy, with no maximum at super-heavy. Many events also run an open class (absolute) for all weights.

Do you weigh in with your gi on in BJJ?

Yes, at IBJJF gi events. The IBJJF’s charts are maximum weights with the uniform on, which is why the gi limits are higher than the no-gi ones. At IBJJF events you are weighed once, just before your first match, and weighing over your limit means disqualification.

What weight is rooster in BJJ?

For adult men, rooster is up to 57.5 kg (127 lb) with the gi on, and up to 55.5 kg (122.6 lb) in no-gi. For adult women, it is up to 48.5 kg (107 lb) in the gi and 46.5 kg (103 lb) in no-gi.

What is ultra-heavy in BJJ?

Ultra-heavy is the heaviest men’s IBJJF division, with no maximum weight. It starts above super-heavy: 100.5 kg (222 lb) with the gi on, or 97.5 kg (215 lb) in no-gi.

Can white belts enter the open class?

It depends on the event. At the Pan Pacific IBJJF Championship 2026, white belts had no open class in the gi, the top three in each other division could enter, and every adult black belt was eligible. Check each event’s page.

About the data

Training frequency and experience: self-reported answers from 3,316 adults (18 and over) who joined JitsAI between 16 October 2025 and 24 September 2026 and told us their belt at sign-up. Snapshot 25 Sep 2026. Full breakdown and a CSV on the BJJ belts page.

What we publish: totals only, groups of at least 50 people, and no share that rests on fewer than 10. Founder accounts are excluded and percentages are rounded. Most members found JitsAI through our ads, so this is a big sample but not a random one, and it leans towards people who want to improve and compete. The numbers describe patterns, not causes.
