The BJJ brown belt: requirements, how long it takes, and how brown belts train
Brown is the fourth adult belt in BJJ and the last before black. The IBJJF sets a minimum age of 18 and at least one year at brown before black. In JitsAI’s September 2026 data, 54% of 129 brown belts had trained for ten or more years, and 74% train both gi and no-gi.
What does a brown belt mean in BJJ?
Brown belt is the finishing stage before black. The game is built; the work is refining it, closing the gaps and, for many, teaching. It is the shortest required stay of the colored belts: one year.
It is also a small group. Of the 3,316 adult members in our data, 129 were brown belts, fewer than any belt except black.
What are the IBJJF rules for a brown belt?
- Minimum age: 18.
- Minimum time at brown before black: 1 year, with no minimum for the adult brown belt world champion.
- Provisional brown belts: a brown belt registering with the IBJJF without a previous purple belt registration is classed as provisional for two years.
- The belt: brown, with a black bar about 10 cm long near one end.
- Competition: adult brown belt matches at IBJJF events last 8 minutes. Find BJJ tournaments in the US or competitions in the UK.
How do stripes work on a brown belt?
Up to four stripes, at the professor’s discretion. At black belt that changes: the IBJJF only recognizes black belt degrees that follow its own degree system.
How do people earn a brown belt?
Brown belt needs at least 18 months at purple and a minimum age of 18. By then most grapplers have trained for many years.
Brown belts in our data have trained for five or more years in 95% of cases. Shares for shorter spells rest on fewer than 10 people, so we don’t publish them.

How do you prove progress between belts?
Belts move slowly, and stripes depend on your gym. JitsAI’s ladder proves progress between belts: every technique you test is scored against the kind of partner it worked on.
- One Focus a week, with pinned lessons from Henrique Rezende’s 74-lesson fundamentals course.
- A nine-level ladder for every technique, from partners less experienced than you to more experienced ones, each split lighter, same weight and heavier.
- Land it once and it’s a hit; 3 wins across 2 sessions and it’s proven.

How often do brown belts train?
Brown belts most often train three or four times a week: 57% said so. 21% train five or more times a week, against 17% of all members, and 21% once or twice. The how often to train BJJ guide compares every belt.
Do brown belts train gi or no-gi?
Most train both: 74% of brown belts. 18% train in the gi only, and fewer than 10 brown belts said no-gi only, so we don’t publish that share.
Do brown belts compete?
69% of brown belts compete often or sometimes, against 41% of all members. Another 10% said they want to but haven’t yet. Divisions are split by weight: see the BJJ weight classes.
Why do brown belts train?
Members could pick several reasons. For brown belts, the top two were discipline (69%) and competition (57%).
These are patterns in who answered, not causes: training more often is not shown to make anyone progress faster.
What should a brown belt work on?
Brown belt is about the details that decide close rounds against other advanced grapplers: timing, grips and the transitions between your best positions.
It helps to keep score. Which of your positions still fail against heavier, more experienced partners? Those are the ones to test next.

About the data
Training frequency and experience: self-reported answers from 3,316 adults (18 and over) who joined JitsAI between 16 October 2025 and 24 September 2026 and told us their belt at sign-up. Snapshot 25 Sep 2026. Full breakdown and a CSV on the BJJ belts page.
What we publish: totals only, groups of at least 50 people, and no share that rests on fewer than 10. Founder accounts are excluded and percentages are rounded. Most members found JitsAI through our ads, so this is a big sample but not a random one, and it leans towards people who want to improve and compete. The numbers describe patterns, not causes.
