The BJJ purple belt: requirements, how long it takes, and how purple belts train

JitsAI dataUpdated 29 Sep 2026

Purple is the third adult belt in BJJ. The IBJJF sets a minimum age of 16, at least two years at blue before it, and at least 18 months at purple before brown. In JitsAI’s September 2026 data, 53% of 321 purple belts had trained for five to ten years, and 25% train five or more times a week.

What does a purple belt mean in BJJ?

Purple belt is where a grappler’s own game takes shape. The basics are automatic, so the work moves to connecting positions: a guard that leads to sweeps, a pass that leads to a pin, a pin that leads to a finish.

Purple is also the usual floor for teaching. In the UK, the national governing body, UKBJJA, requires every instructor at a member club to be purple belt or higher from a verifiable lineage.

What are the IBJJF rules for a purple belt?

How do stripes work on a purple belt?

Up to four stripes, at the professor’s discretion. The 18-month minimum counts from the day the purple belt is registered with the IBJJF.

How do people earn a purple belt?

Getting to purple takes at least two years at blue under IBJJF rules. In practice, coaches tend to look for a recognizable game: a guard and a passing style that work against other blue belts, and the ability to help newer students.

Purple belts in our data have trained for two to ten years in 83% of cases, and 15% for more than ten.

How do you prove progress between belts?

Belts move slowly, and stripes depend on your gym. JitsAI’s ladder proves progress between belts: every technique you test is scored against the kind of partner it worked on.

  • One Focus a week, with pinned lessons from Henrique Rezende’s 74-lesson fundamentals course.
  • A nine-level ladder for every technique, from partners less experienced than you to more experienced ones, each split lighter, same weight and heavier.
  • Land it once and it’s a hit; 3 wins across 2 sessions and it’s proven.

These are patterns in who answered, not causes: training more often is not shown to make anyone progress faster.

What should a purple belt work on?

Purple is a good time to find where your game breaks. Most plateaus sit in one position that keeps failing against the same kind of partner, not in the whole game.

Test one position a week on partners who are heavier and more experienced, not only the ones it already works on. How to get better at BJJ has the weekly plan and a printable template.

Most members found JitsAI through our ads, so this is a big sample but not a random one, and it leans towards people who want to improve and compete. The numbers describe patterns, not causes.
